Simon Hatchwell was born in 1929 in Safi, Morocco. His paternal family lived in Essaouira and the family still enjoy connections to the town. He grew up in an observant family and had a strong Jewish identity from childhood. In 1957 Simon left Morocco and took up a teaching position at a Jewish school in Brighton, where he settled.
